Steve Zbranek Inducted into HBA Hall of Honor

Home Builders Association of Greater Austin Recognizes Steve Zbranek with Distinguished Excellence Award

The Home Builders Association of Greater Austin awarded Steve Zbranek of Zbranek & Holt Custom Homes, Ltd. special recognition by inducting him into the Associations “Hall of Honor” during the Presidential Awards and Installation Dinner on November 14^th.

This Distinguished Excellence Award is reserved for a member demonstrating “Outstanding Leadership, Professionalism and Exemplary Service” to the association, homebuilding industry and the community. His accomplishments listed during the event presentation included 33 years of work in the building industry, service as President of the Greater San Antonio Builders Association and the Home Builders Association of Greater Austin and two time recipient of the “National Master Builder of the Year” award. He is the founder and first president of the Lakeway Chapter of the Austin Builders Association. Zbranek continues to serve on the faculty of the University of Housing (the education arm of the National Association of Homebuilders) as a national instructor for the Graduate Master Builder program and is recognized as the second highest new member recruiter in the history of the Austin Home Builders Association. He has also served as the Chairman of the Lake Travis Chamber of Commerce and was recognized as their 2012 “Citizen of the Year” for his community service efforts.

In his acceptance speech, Zbranek urged those in attendance to consider what any single individual can do to make a difference, “I find myself constantly challenged to go beyond what others might think one man can do to make a difference in our industry and our community…just know one man, one person can accomplish so much.”

Steve Zbranek weighs in on Austin Business Journals “Home wars: Builders strike back” from October 11,2011

Steve Zbranek, 2-Time National Master Builder of the Year, 4-Time Texas Custom Home Builder of the Year, and Past-President of the Greater Austin Home Builders Association, shares his view on this topic in an Austin Business Journal article by Colin Pope on October 11, 2012.

In every industry, trying to offer new reasons for customers to buy is front and center. Airlines now include WiFi, free movies and custom lounges. The least expensive automobiles are equipped with navigation, climate control and multiple airbags. The housing industry is also in this game.

Each year, new homes are built more efficiently and include the most current technology. Examples of this are home automation, gadgets for appliances, sustainable building materials, keyless entry hardware and energy saving systems such as passive solar and tank less water heaters. One national home builder recently announced that every home in a certain area where they build would be LEED certified.

Buying a new home still makes the best sense. Putting new engines on an old airplane, or repainting a used car just makes old technology run longer. The new, fun stuff that the public sees included in the “home makeovers” on TV is simply good marketing to demonstrate what’s available in new homes today. Add that to longer, more inclusive builder warranties and the choice becomes clearer. New homes are more energy efficient, safer to live in, easier to operate and most of all, brand new.

Darn all of us Bob Vila wannabes.

Having our way with an old house is just too appealing for some — especially with all the inspiring work being showcased on channels such as HGTV. That’s why homebuilders across the country are pooling millions to pay for advertisements that will urge Americans to buy new homes and forget about pre-owned.

Expect the messages to pop up soon in just about every major U.S. city.

We all know that the recession has pinched homebuilders bad. But as real estate reporter Jan Buchholz reported in this week’s paper, economics aren’t the only thing holding homebuilders back during this recovery.

Home improvement shows depicting 30-day transformations from musty and old to modern and bold are a notable factor, homebuilders say. And they’re misleading, they add.

Think any of those home redoes are as easy and quick as they look on TV? Homebuilders will tell you ‘heck no, renovations are a pain. Buying new is the way to go.’

That’ll likely be the gist of the campaign that is being put together by GSD&M, the Austin ad firm that taught us you Don’t Mess With Texas and bags fly free on Southwest Airlines.

This is the first time the U.S. homebuilding industry has done anything like this. The way some see it, these converted do-it-yourselfers watching TV need a dose of reality. With every televised swing of the hammer, DIY preachers have been building a formidable army that’s cutting into bottom lines. It’s time for the homebuilders — about 30 of them in all — to strike back.

There are a lot of people in Austin who hope their ads hit house hunters where they live — including me. Participation on the Austin Business Journal‘s annual list of top Austin homebuilders really dipped with the economy. Too many were embarrassed to share their numbers. Or maybe nonparticipating companies laid off the marketing person who usually submits that data to us. In any case, participation is getting better and the list of local builders is getting long again.

Still, homebuilders have a lot of work to do. They hope. Let’s do a spur-of-the-moment focus group for them. Tell us via our online poll: If you were in the market for a new home, would you lean toward new or pre-owned?
